When we were approached to write this Blog we were initially going to outsource it.  Well, we’re busy people, no point spending time writing a CAD Outsourcing Blog when we can be doing other things.  Then we thought, “some things simply cannot be outsourced”.  Well whilst there is some truth in this, it is not strictly true for every element of a business.  The fact that certain “non-core activities” cannot be outsourced is the common misconception by many Architectural or Engineering consultancies currently operating their business all under one roof.  The idea that a task, for example AutoCAD, 3D MEP, Revit, SketchUP, Hevacomp or Amtech that has always been done “in-house” can all of a sudden be outsourced to “someone else’s house”, in a different country, completed, checked, returned and with no errors.  The concept for this unexpected shift of company resources is incomprehensible.
Mentioning CAD Outsourcing to numerous employers and employees, they will immediately think redundancies, low quality, missed deadlines, lost information and is simply “Not Feasible”.  Of course in the current financial climate the redundancies are unfortunately happening at an alarming rate, although the catalyst for this is not because the work is being outsourced, but due to there being little or no work.  Consequently potential Clients or Contractors are looking for the best, most cost effective deal available in the marketplace.  It’s a “buyers market” with project costs being driven down and everyone wanting a piece of the action.  The majority of International Engineering Consultants have already trimmed their staffing to minimal levels and are still continuing to do so.
The erroneous thinking that quality will drop, drawings will be late, information will go missing and it cannot be done offshore are statements made by those who are either unsure how the Outsourcing Model works or maybe do not like change.
